Terry Waite CBE This unusual story traces the journey of a small brass altar cross made by allied prisoners in Changi prisoner-of-war camp, Singapore, in 1942. The prisoners took the cross up-country with them during the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway, where they struggled to keep faith and hope alive under the most appalling conditions. The survivors then brought it back to Changi gaol for their final year of imprisonment. When the war ended in 1945, the cross was taken home to the UK but it was returned to Changi Museum in 1992. Then, in a remarkable sequence of events, the cross brought an orphaned son close to the prisoner-of-war father he never knew. The war years are brought vividly to life with eye-witness accounts and original sketches and paintings. It is an inspirational tale of courage and determination and, against all the odds, the survival of the human spirit.
