Portrait in Grey: Short History of Quakers

It seeks to draw a portrait of the Quakers, showing how their distinctive way of life developed and expanded around the world, and how many Friends contributed to intellectual, business and social life. The Quakers worship in silence. They do without creeds, clergy, consecrated buildings and sacraments, and have always had women ministers. Known for philanthropy, zeal for social reform and hard headed business sense, they oppose war and violence of all kinds without compromise. In the nineteenth century they campaigned against slavery. In the twentieth their international work as an expression of their Peace Testimony was rewarded with a Nobel Peace Prize.
