Conviction uses first-hand accounts to help students:
* think about the consequences of warfare and violence
* understand the dillemas and difficulties faced by those who objected to the war and fighting in it
* reflect on the question of whether it is ever right to use force to achieve a good end
* learn about conscientious objection as a human right and a personal and political way of objecting to war
* consider the importance of peacbuilding to prevent violence from occurring in the first place
Conviction can help the teachers in their provision of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC). The case studies can be used as whole-class resources or as a basis of group work. 'Further activities' sections encourage active participation, and encourage students to critically examine notions of loyalty, patriotism and militarism, and to consider how these relate to moral choices today.
