Quaker worship is based on experience but experience is in good part shaped by our understandings. When they change, in the struggle to thresh the truth anew, worship changes too. The power of God is known in new ways for many of us today. The language of that-of-God-within cannot but be informed by counselling, biology and neurology; and that-of-God-wihout is infused with visions of galaxies upon galaxies and images of space-walkers and cosmologists. Our God has been too parochial. Today understanding must be global, even universal, and our faith about building bridges. Science dances with Religion, knowledge with spirituality, now as partners exploring the oneness of reality. These are breathtakingly exciting times to be making new explorations. 'The power we call God' claims that such threshings matter and offer rich matter for threshings. This can be pursued over four challenging group sessions, addressing 'God and Religion in our Time', 'Myth, Gods and Self-Identity', 'The God of the Quakers' and 'Towards a new understanding'. No-one would be unchanged by such a journey. This booklet will spark strong responses when read alone but is aimed at those bold study groups who dare to live adventurously, engaging with disturbing contemporary ideas.
